In this video:
We discuss the overhead press (OHP) and why I no longer train it for strength!
So a few years ago, I used to train the OHP
I took a similar approach to most guys - I ran generic intermediate strength training programs like Wendler 5/3/1, Texas Method and 5x5
I did the bench press 1-2x per week and the OHP 1-2x per week
And I got to average numbers on both: I could bench around 110kg and could OHP bodyweight (I think my OHP was actually better relative to my bench press)
I got my OHP to bodyweight pretty quickly (90kg) then I got bored of it
I quickly realised that in order to be great at either one, I would need to focus more volume towards one or the other
In my experience, it is VERY difficult to train both with the requisite volumes and intensities to get super strong at either one
You need to pick one or the other, and if you’re like me, you probably care more about your bench than your OHP
In the video, I tell you how to structure your training program if you DO want to maximise strength in the OHP + how to balance goals of getting a big bench/big OHP simultaneously
If you have any questions, leave them in the comment section of this video.
Thank you so much for watching & I hope this video helped you.
