V-Ray | How to USE BACKPLATES | Part 1: Preparation, Lighting + GI, Tonemapping
In this tutorial you will learn how to integrate any 3D Object into Backplates. You can use this Workflow for both Stillframes and Animations whenever you want to seamlessly blend a 3D Rendering with a Backplate that was captured with a Photo oder Video Camera. This tutorial series is structured in 2 separate parts. For Part 1 we will learn how to gather the required Resources and how to prepare our Backplate, HDRI and 3d Scene. We will also match the Perspective of our 3D Camera to the one in the Backplate. Afterwards we will learn how to build a matching Direct Lighting and GI (Global Illumination) Setup. Finally we will discover how to apply tonemapping to our linear part of the Image without affecting the already tonemapped Backplate. I am using 3ds Max 2022 and V-Ray 5 in this demo but you can also use the same techniques for older versions. A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.
