Whether you need to understand similes better in order to create this type of figurative language for use in your own writing or you need to be able to identify similes to aid you in analyzing text, this video lesson will be helpful to you! FREE downloadable pdf of the powerpoint slides from this video lesson: https://mailchi.mp/5fde48e594db/never-stop-learning-simile-comparison-powerpoint Similes use figurative language to create helpful mental images that enable a reader (listener) to understand how two different things are alike in some way. Comparisons use literal language to describe some factual similarity between two things that are much alike. Similes and metaphors are both types of figurative language that make use of comparison. Similes make a figurative comparison using the word "like" or "as," and metaphors make a direct comparison between two things that are very different from each other. Often, similes will reveal the quality that the two dissimilar things share (He is as strong as a lion) while metaphors leave it up to the reader (listener) to discern what quality the two things share (He is a lion).
