Determining Character Traits
Character traits and physical traits considered together are, in the realm of literary analysis, referred to as characterization. While physical traits are explicit in text, most often character traits are implicit, that is, the reader must use clues from the text to infer traits of specific characters.
Those clues come from what a character does (his/her actions), thinks, or says.
Details that occur over and over again in a story can be used as evidence to prove a character possesses a particular trait. Details that occur infrequently, or only once, do not constitute evidence of a character trait.
In this video lesson, I show students how to determine character traits of KIM, from chapter one in the book SEEDFOLKS by Paul Fleischman.
