The caretaker of the buildings was SHOCKED when he saw me come and clean the sidewalks for free. Today, our group decided to clean up a stretch of sidewalk in front of the high-rise buildings. The sidewalk here had been covered with thick grass, and the drain was full of trash. Anyone passing by would just glance at it without paying attention. We started our work early in the morning, armed only with hand tools. I used a shovel to dig up the dirt, then I began pulling trash out of the drain. After a while, the noise caught the attention of an elderly man – the guard of a nearby building. At first, he just stood there watching from a distance, but then he approached and curiously asked, “Who are you? Why are you doing this?” When he found out that we were volunteers cleaning for free, his face showed surprise. He couldn’t believe that, in this day and age, there were still young people willing to do such hard work without expecting anything in return. He also shared, “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anyone care about this place. What you’re doing is really meaningful, thank you so much!” His words warmed our hearts. He even stayed to chat more, telling us about his life and the difficulties of maintaining this area. The cleaning session ended, and the sidewalk was much cleaner and tidier.
