From the moment we arrived, the vibes were unreal—Malta has this perfect blend of ancient history, breathtaking limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and some of the best beaches we’ve ever seen. The Maltese cuisine? Absolutely amazing, from pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas) to fresh seafood, ftira (Maltese bread), and rabbit stew, a local favorite. And the people? Some of the most welcoming we’ve met, always eager to share stories about their island’s heritage and unique traditions, like Luzzu fishing boats with their painted eyes for protection. Looking back, we can confidently say that Malta is one of the greatest destinations we’ve ever traveled to. For seven days, we explored Malta’s most iconic cities, villages, and islands, immersing ourselves in its rich past. Staying in Birgu, one of the historic Three Cities, we had the perfect base to discover places like Mdina—the “Silent City” with its medieval walls, narrow alleyways, and grand Baroque palaces—Valletta, the stunning capital built by the Knights of St. John, and Rabat, home to St. Paul’s Catacombs, which date back to Roman times. The architecture in Valletta blew us away, from St. John’s Co-Cathedral, with its jaw-dropping gold-gilded interiors and Caravaggio paintings, to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. We also made it to Gozo, Malta’s greener and quieter sister island, where we saw the Ggantija Temples, some of the oldest megalithic structures in the world, and swam in the famous Ramla Bay, known for its unique red sand. Another highlight? Comino, famous for the unbelievably blue waters of the Blue Lagoon, where we snorkeled among colorful fish and explored hidden sea caves. The nightlife in Paceville, the coastal beauty of Sliema and St. Julian’s, and the rugged landscapes of Dingli Cliffs, Golden Bay, and the Blue Grotto added even more variety to our trip. But beyond the sights, Malta’s history is what truly amazed us. This tiny country has been inhabited for over 7,000 years, with some of the oldest free-standing temples in the world—older than the Pyramids of Egypt! It has been influenced by the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, the Knights of St. John, the French, and the British, each leaving a unique mark on its culture, language, and architecture. Some of the most epic fortresses, palaces, and harbors remain from these eras, like Fort St. Elmo, Fort Manoel, and the Lascaris War Rooms, a secret underground complex used during World War II. One of the coolest facts? During the war, Malta was one of the most heavily bombed places on Earth, yet it never surrendered. As a result, the entire country was awarded the George Cross for bravery, which still appears on Malta’s flag today. Beyond history, we were captivated by the Maltese language, a unique mix of Arabic, Italian, and English influences, and the island’s lively festivals, from Carnival in February to the traditional village festas in summer. We even got to see some of the famous fireworks displays that light up the sky during these celebrations. With its turquoise waters, rich history, prehistoric sites, and lively Mediterranean culture, Malta left an unforgettable mark on us.
