Today, we're exploring the charming hamlet of Winson, nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds. Located near the iconic village of Bibury, Winson is a peaceful and lesser-known destination, offering a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of its more popular neighbour. Both villages sit within the stunning Coln Valley, with the meandering River Coln adding to the idyllic setting. Winson is a serene spot with a few notable highlights. The village is home to a quaint Norman church, St. Michael’s, which may be small compared to other local churches, but is rich in history and worth a visit. Its churchyard is adorned with handsome tombs, and the chancel features interesting decoration. The view from the churchyard across the village green is simply delightful. One of the architectural gems in Winson is a beautiful classical manor house overlooking the green. Built in 1740 for Richard Howse, Surgeon-General to the Army, this elegant residence is a small yet well-proportioned home that may have been designed with input from the renowned Scottish architect, James Gibbs, known for his work on St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. The house is a testament to Winson’s understated grandeur. The village is full of honey-coloured Cotswold stone houses, each more picturesque than the last. There’s even a charming thatched cottage by a babbling brook nearby, adding to the quintessentially English countryside vibe. Just outside the village, the Old Water Mill still stands, its riverbed flowing beneath the converted farmhouse as it has done for centuries. If you're seeking a quintessential Cotswolds village without the crowds, Winson is the perfect destination. Its tranquil lanes, stunning architecture, and natural beauty make it a wonderful place to visit—so, if you're looking to escape the tourist throngs, be sure to come and enjoy this hidden gem.
