Ned watches mournfully as Robert closes his eyes and drifts off to unconsciousness. When Pycelle checks in on him, he announces that the king has slipped into a coma. Though he lives, it is impossible to tell when he will wake up, if at all.
Hearing that his friend still lives is heartening, but Ned knows there is little time to delay. He gathers his men and tries to secure the succession while he can, even going so far as to trust Littlefinger with gathering the Gold Cloaks to his side. It is bold and desperate, but it is all he can do. Should the king never wake, then it is up to him to secure the throne from Cersei.
However, these plans fall apart as the queen has already prepared for this and Littlefinger betrays Ned, leading to his defeat, capture, and eventual execution. Though the Stark army is on the warpath and even managed to defeat the Lannisters in battle, it seems like all is secure in the capital at least.
But while Joffrey sits on the Iron Throne and Cersei whispers in his ear, planning to deal with the Baratheons outside of the city, she ignores her husband. That is until his eyes open and his body rises from the bed.
Pycelle arrives just as Robert stirs, his eyes widening. The scrolls he’s carrying drop to the ground.
Robert: What are you looking at? Can’t a man get some rest around here? Get Lord Stark in here immediately. I want to ask if he’s finished the errand I sent him.
Pycelle: L-lord S-sta-ark, your grace?
Robert: Are you deaf as well as dumb? Yes, the Hand of the King.
Pycelle: Y-your Grace. Y-you have been i-in a c-coma for a f-f-fortnight. Much has changed.
Robert’s face darkens. He grabs the Maester by the chain and pulls him close, demanding to know what has happened. This manages to coax the stuttering tail out of Pycelle who explains everything, though he’s careful to word it and makes it seem like Ned tried to stage a coup under the queen’s nose.
This does little to ease Robert’s anger who roars and throws things against the wall. Although the Grand Maester urges him to rest, the king demands court be called. As the lords and ladies of the capital gather, they all murmur amongst themselves, wondering what is happening. Among them is the Queen who announces that the king has not yet called the court.
Robert: Yes he has!
The crowd freezes at the sound of that voice. Cersei’s smug expression crumbles immediately as the doors to the throne room slide open and the herald announces the name of her husband. She shakes her head in disbelief, but Robert himself appears, striding down the halls.
All eyes turn to him as he regards his wife with utter loathing. The queen instinctively moves aside as he eases himself on the throne.
Cersei: You are well, husband. I-
Robert: No thanks to you, traitor. Is this the realm I wake up to? I’m not even dead yet and I wake up to a realm tearing itself apart while vultures circle me?
Cersei: This is but chaos you created-
Robert: Silence woman, I didn’t give you leave to speak. I will hear of what happened and I shall have the truth!
Cersei: Very well, after you slipped into a coma, Lord Stark attempted to stage a coup, naming himself Protector of the Realm. He even paid off the City Watch to back his claim.
Robert: And at no point did it ever occur to you that those might have been my orders?
Cersei: It seemed rather suspicious, Pycelle even said that you were delirious and in no position to give orders. We believed he was taking advantage of the state you were in.
The more Cersei talks, the greater Robert’s fury grows. He announces that the Starks and his brothers are to be pardoned, meanwhile, the Queen Mother and the royal children are to be detained in the Red Keep while Robert decides what to do with them. The Gold Cloaks hurry to obey and reaffirm their loyalty to the king.
Aside from that, Robert decides to summon Stannis to court. He first sends a raven, but then decides to send someone personally and orders one of his few trustworthy kingsguard, Aerys Oakhart to journey to Dragonstone and summon Stannis personally, telling him to sail to King’s Landing immediately. Meanwhile, Ser Balon Swann is sent south to summon Renly immediately.
However, while the Gold Cloaks are momentarily cowed, Lord Janos Slynt knows how precarious his position is. His lordship and control over Harrenhal all depend on his favor with the Lannisters. In the dead of night, he and a group of his most loyal men break into the Red Keep and free Joffrey, spiriting him out with the help of Ser Preston Greenfield. They slay his guards and make their way out of the city
They nearly succeed with Cersei herself, but Ser Boros and Ser Meryn are both caught by Ser Mandone Moore who kills them. When he hears of
