What if Robert Baratheon Learned the TRUTH About Jon Snow? Let’s explore the depths of it in the video.
Varys slips into his quarters after another long Small Council meeting. This meeting provided ample opportunity to observe the Hand and understand who he is. The more he learned of Ned, the more concerned he grew.
Truthfully, the new Hand was woefully unfit for politics. He was honorable, incorruptible, and honest to a fault. Yet, he was also intelligent and observant. Already some of his little birds have reported that Ned has begun sticking his nose in matters he shouldn’t.
Should Lord Eddard begin to unravel the secrets of the Red Keep, it could bring the king’s attention to the realm. Or worse, even stabilize the realm.
Varys reaches for a parchment and paper, quickly scribbling down a message to Gerold Darkstar.
But for the most part, all eyes are focused on the Tourney of the Hand. Its splendor and excitement are enough to distract the court from more pressing matters. Even Robert’s outburst against Cersei during the tourney’s first day is not enough to dampen the mood. But it does leave Varys with the perfect opportunity to approach her.
Cersei: What are you doing here, Spider? Has my husband sent you to check up on me?
Varys: No, your grace. I am here on my behalf, though I am certain your husband is worried sick about you. I am here to discuss a pressing matter. Lord Stark has been behaving rather oddly. My little birds have reported seeing him across King’s Landing, in inns, blacksmiths, and brothels.
Cersei: Why should that concern me?
Varys: These were the same places the late Jon Arryn visited before his death.
Cersei: Pauses. And why are you bringing this matter to me and not the king?
Varys: Because the king is not the one ruling the Seven Kingdoms. And our new Hand’s presence can…complicate many people’s plans. I thought bringing this news to you would be prudent so you may prepare yourself for any secrets that might be revealed.
Cersei: Angry. I could have your head for that.
Her guards approach, but Varys smiles and raises his hand.
Varys: Peace, your grace. Some secrets are those best kept hidden. But are you prepared to silence this secret at the cost of Lord Stark’s? I fear that he will learn too much and upset our plans. But, his position is far from secure and I believe I can dislodge him with your support of course.
Cersei: Do not play games with me, eunuch. I am not a woman to be trifled with. However, I will grant you my support for now. What would you have me do?
Varys: Nothing much, simply keep King Robert occupied and monitor Lord Eddard. And if possible, perhaps you may whisper into your husband's ear. Though he might not believe everything now, things will come together very soon.
Cersei: My husband has never been a focused man. Very well, but be quick about this Spider.
As it turns out, distracting Robert was even easier than expected as soon after the King’s Tourney, something else grabbed his attention. The pregnancy of Daenerys shocks Robert enough to attend a Small Council meeting where he orders her to be dealt with.
Varys watches as Robert and Eddard turn against one another and listens, carefully. But as that happens, his little birds report everything happening beyond. Ned has already visited several of Robert’s bastards and now gained a book regarding the marriages of various houses.
He knows it will not be long and receives word from Gerald Dayne that he is on the way.
Meanwhile, Cersei keeps up her half of the bargain by keeping Robert occupied with feasts and hunts. More importantly, she says how guards spot him leaving the Red Keep for brothels and how he corresponds with other members of the Small Council in secret meetings.
However, these are all brushed off by Robert who laughs them off, even snidely saying if she wishes to turn him against Ned, she best try something a bit more clever than that.
His confidence in Ned annoys Cersei to no end, but she forces herself to hold her tongue, remembering the words of Varys. But this situation turns from simple rumors to violence as news spreads that Tyrion Lannister was kidnapped by Ned’s wife and in response, Jaime attacks him in the street. The ensuing battle leaves nearly a dozen men dead on the street and Ned’s leg broken.
This time, there is irrefutable proof of Ned’s visit to the brothel. But yet again Robery doesn’t seem to care. While he does order Ned to release Tyrion, he sternly orders the Lannisters to leave the Hand be and he is allowed to visit whatever places he wishes. Far be it for a man like Robert to ever condemn another for enjoying the companies of whores.
But as the king leaves Ned’s chambers, he’s visited by an unlikely person, Varys who insists they speak immediately.
Varys: Apologies, your grace. But this matter is.
