I've wanted to film the oldest part of the city for a while now and as much as I love to walk in nature away from city life, I really love old stuff and find the history of this country so interesting. In this video we walk from the Queen Victoria Square to Hull's Old Town paying particular attention to the historic architecture as we head towards the River Hull.
The statue in Queen Victoria Square was designed in 1903 by the City Hall which was built between 1903 and 1909. The Punch Hotel dates back to the mid 1800s. The site and money for Ferens Gallery which opened in 1927 were donated to the city by Thomas Ferens. The Maritime Museum was originally called the Dock offices and it opened in 1871. The Empress originally known as the Dockside Tavern was converted to a public house in 1903. A guildhall, was first mentioned in 1333. The current Guildhall was designed to accommodate the civic offices and law courts and was built between 1906 and 1914. St Mary's built from around 1327.
The oldest street in Hull, High Street dates to the 1100s and runs parallel with the River Hull. Oriel Chambers was built in 1879 on a plot of land held by Robert de Dripole in 1293.
Wilberforce House built in 1660 is one of the oldest buildings in Hull and is the birthplace of social reformer William Wilberforce (1759–1833), who used his time as a member of Parliament to work for the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire. The buildings next to Wilberforce House are Georgian houses built around 1757 by James Hamilton, a ship owner and tar merchant.
Dunswell’s Forge is a prime example of a smithy, which would have serviced the many horses and carts used by the Hull trades in the vicinity. Ye Olde Black Boy is the oldest pub in Hull dating back to 1729.
Hepworth's Arcade was built in 1894 by Gelder and Kitchen for Joseph Hepworth the tailor and was also home to one of the earliest Marks and Spencer penny bazaars.
Trinity Market is the city’s oldest covered market and opened in 1904. Hull's first recorded weekly outdoor market was held in 1279.
Holy Trinity Church became Hull Minster in 2017. The earliest sections of the building are the transepts which date from around 1300–20.
The Old Grammar School was built in 1583 as the Hull Merchant Adventurers' Hall. It only housed the Grammar School from 1766 until 1878. Andrew Marvell and William Wilberforce were pupils here. Trinity House, is a seafaring organisation consisting of a charity for seafarers, a school, and a guild of mariners established in 1787. Next Door to the Manchester Arms is 5 Scale Lane, Hull's oldest domestic building dating back to the 15th century. Built in the late 1700s, The Manchester Arms is named after the HMS Manchester, which is believed to have been the first ship to enter Hull’s dock. However, it had several names before 1876, including The Slaw Bone and The Earl Grey. The Parochial Offices were built in 1864 as the parish rooms of Holy Trinity and St Mary's parishes. The Mission pub and restaurant was built in 1926–27 as the Mariners' Church of the Good Shepherd. Corporation Pier (later named Victoria Pier after a royal visit in 1854) was built in 1810. This is where people would catch the ferry to cross the River before the Humber Bridge finally rendered it obsolete in 1981. It had a British Rail booking office and was one of the few train stations in the country where no trains ran.
