Relaxing Walk from Country Estate to Small Village | NUNNINGTON, ENGLAND.
Join me on this lovely Winter's day as we walk from the old manor house Nunnington Hall by the River Rye to the picturesque English village of Nunnington which is nestled in the beautiful countryside of the Howardian Hills. If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPUj1AkibgXXg_fLvSaM0Aw I really enjoyed this walk and was lucky enough to be granted permission to film the hall gardens despite being closed for the off-season. I do enjoy a surprise animal encounter when filming and on this occasion I get up close with a beautiful peacock. Nunnington is a quiet village in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, best-known for the Tudor manor house Nunnington Hall, now owned by the National Trust. Nunnington takes its name from a nunnery, likely in the present location of the Hall which existed prior to the Norman conquest. The village is surrounded by the Howardian Hills National Landscape which covers 79 sq miles of the North Yorkshire countryside between the North York Moors National Park, the Yorkshire Wolds and the Vale of York. Nunnington Hall is a country house which was built on land that belonged to the wealthy St Mary's Abbey in York during medieval times. William Parr, 1st Marquess of Northampton, lord of the manor of Nunnington and brother of queen consort Catherine Parr, built the oldest parts of the surviving house of Nunnington, which now form part of the west front. The hall was subject to let following the forfeiture of the estate in 1553 (for Parr's part in setting Lady Jane Grey on the throne). The hall was inherited in 1920 by Margaret Rutson, who along with husband Ronald D'Arcy Fife undertook a major renovation of the property in the 1920s using the architect Walter Brierley. Margaret later bequeathed Nunnington Hall, much of its contents, and its gardens to the National Trust upon her death in 1952. The oldest parts of All Saints and St James' church date to the late 12th or early 13th century. Two narrow lancet windows suggest a 12th-century date. The chancel arch and east window almost certainly date to the latter half of the 13th century. The first written record of a rector comes from 1287 when John de Barton was presented to the living by Sir John de Stonegrave. We know that there were earlier incumbents, however, as there is a dispute about the right of presentation in the King's Court at Westminster well before Barton's appointment. The most impressive historical monument is the medieval effigy of a knight under a recess in the south wall of the nave. The knight is thought to be Sir Walter de Teyes, the lord of the manor of Nunnington and Stonegrave from 1295-1325. Sir Walter inherited the manors by marrying Isobel, the daughter of Sir John Stonegrave. He fought in the Scottish wars under Edward I and Edward II, and served as the Governor of the city of York. His effigy shows extremely fine carving detail and depicts him clad in chain mail. There is a lion at his feet and the remains of a lion at his pillow and another holding his shield.
