Toshiba XR-J9: The non-portable portable

I was intrigued enough by this Toshiba CD player from 1986 to buy it from eBay even though the fault seemed difficult to fix. Its small size suggests that it was a portable player, but there's no battery option which left me wondering who it was originally marketed at.
