This Is One of Those SONGS Where You’ll GO…Oh YA! I REMEMBER THIS ONE…I LOVE IT! | Professor of Rock
Coming up next: one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the '80s and beyond, Neil Finn, tells the story of his first band, Split Enz. They were underground heroes who would later conquer the mainstream with some of the best songs of the decade, including their 1980 single I Got You that became the biggest-selling single in Australian history, even though Neil thought the chorus was Corny and was planning to replace it but ran out of time. Then, another single One Step Ahead that became one of the first videos played on MTV, where one of his bandmates did the Moonwalk years before Michael Jackson would. Then there’s the song that he wrote for a fan because they traveled all across the world to meet him. It’s an entertaining interview with one of the finest songwriters ever next on professor of rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Norman Buchwald, Cliff Konstans, Steve DocPinko Cloutier, Jenny Blaxell, Jason Elliott, AArthriticGamer ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store - Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 - The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq - 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 - Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ - 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX - Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk - Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! Insight you won’t find anywhere else. And you’ll love this one… It’s another one of our most requested songs from you, the viewers. I have Neil Finn the singer and writer behind Crowded House but today in addition to covering Crowded House we get the story behind several of his biggest songs with his first band Split Enz… which was really his brother Tim’s band that he started way back in 1972 with Phil Judd as more of a progressive art rock band but when Judd left, little brother Neil Finn came in, and the band started moving into a more new wave style. Neil's song I Got You became the band’s biggest hit, and the catchy opening guitar riff would later be ripped off by a famous rapper for his biggest hit. Neil thought the verses were good, but he wanted to replace the chorus but ran out of time, and in the end, the song became the biggest-selling song in Australian history. We’ll also take about the classic song One Step Ahead in which Neil’s bandmate beat Michael Jackson to the punch on doing the moonwalk when it was one of the first videos played on MTV and then Neil tells us about forming crowded house and the fan who traveled all around the world to meet him and how he turned it one of band’s best songs… Here’s the interview. A lot of people forget that Crowded House’s classic self-titled debut album with Don’t Dream It’s Over and Something So Strong was actually a bit of a flop when it was first released. They couldn’t get anything going in America as the first 3 singles missed the top 40 and were stiffs and usually when your first 3 flop you don’t get a 4th one but the fourth times was the charm as Don’t Dream It’s Over became an all time smash and put them on the map. For my money, it's one of the greatest songs to come out of the 80s. I believe this is the most under-appreciated songwriter of his generation. Leave us a comment.
