The Biggest Problem With E10 Fuel And Lawnmowers
Hi and welcome to Micks Mowers
In this Video Using E10 fuel (which contains 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) in a lawnmower can present several problems, especially if the equipment wasn't designed for ethanol-blended fuels.
Firstly, ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. In small engines like those in lawnmowers, this can lead to phase separation—where water and ethanol settle at the bottom of the fuel tank—causing starting issues, poor performance, or engine stalling. Over time, the moisture and ethanol mix can corrode metal parts, damage rubber seals, and degrade plastic components in the fuel system.
Secondly, ethanol burns hotter and cleaner than gasoline, which can affect engine temperature and increase wear if the mower isn't adjusted for it. Ethanol also deteriorates faster than pure gasoline, leading to stale fuel that gums up carburetors and fuel lines, especially in equipment that sits unused for long periods.
Manufacturers often recommend using fuel with no more than 10% ethanol, but even at this level, E10 can reduce engine life and reliability if proper storage and maintenance steps aren't followed. For best results, many users opt for ethanol-free fuel or add stabilizers to E10 when storing lawn equipment long-term.
