Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella, former in-game leader of Team Liquid and now retired, is the star of the 301st Episode of 'Reflections'.
nitr0 is one of the most decorated North American Counter-Strike players in history. From 2016 to 2019 his Liquid squads were contending for the biggest trophies in the world. In 2016 the arrival of temperamental prodigy s1mple saw them making the semis and finals of a major, the latter the best result an NA team managed until C9's win in 2018, and losing only to the eventual champions LG/SK.
At this time nitr0 was an aggressive rifler but after a failed period of stanislaw IGLing in 2017 nitr0 took the reigns and rarely looked back after. Liquid immediately responded with finals appearances at ESG Mykonos and ESL One New York 2017, both events which saw TL slay the world number one SK Gaming in the semis.
In 2018 Liquid were the clear second best team in the world but Astralis was the one team they could not beat and that was not just the best team at the time but probably in all of history. 2019 saw Liquid and nitr0 finally best Astralis and take over their top spot, culminating in the fastest ever Intel Grand Slam won, as nitr0's Liquid not only won four straight ESL circuit notches but would go on to win six of seven events from May to the end of July. Alas, TL could not deliver upon their favourite status and win the Starladder Berlin Major that year.
nitr0 switched over to VALORANT for a time in 2020 and all of 2021 but he would return last year and Liquid again managed some deep runs in his last stint with them. They were very close to winning ESL ProLeague S16, also made the finals of BLAST World Final, made two semis runs at BLAST Fall Finals and IEM Katowice and most recently Liquid cracked top eight at the BLAST Paris Major.
In part one, nitr0 discusses his early days in the NA scene, finding his footing in Liquid, some funny stories about playing with s1mple and how close Liquid came to winning a major in 2016.
This interview was recorded on the 14th of July, 2023.
