Pruning Shear Restoration – Very Rusty Scissors For Branches
In this video, I’m restoring a very rusty, antique pair of pruning shears, bringing them back to their original forgotten shine! This restoration was a real challenge: the rust had deeply penetrated the metal, even causing pitting, which made some parts damaged or unusable. Join me step by step as I bring this neglected tool back to life.
I start by soaking the pruning shears in vinegar to loosen the rust. The central screw is stuck, so I cut it off with an angle grinder, then drill out the fastener completely. Next, I remove the remaining rust by sandblasting with corundum in the blasting cabinet. To repair the pitting on the blades, I use precise spot welding to avoid overheating the old metal. Then, using a belt grinder and files, I reshape the blades. I restore the damaged areas on the handles with liquid metal, bringing them back to their original form.
I craft a new screw on the lathe, milling four precise flats on the screw to ensure a perfect fit. I also turn a matching nut for the screw. After smoothing the handles, I polish the blades so the shears will cut perfectly again. Finally, I prime and paint all parts to protect the metal from further corrosion, reassemble the shears, and test them on a rose branch.
The result is impressive: a heavily rusted piece is transformed into a fully functional gardening tool once again. Watch the complete transformation and see how these antique shears regain their *forgotten shine*!
