Elf demonstrates how to set up a layered shader in Maya 2023 using the native Arnold renderer. Its very easy to stack materials using the ailayershader, and you also have a mix which means you can use textures or procedural patterns, to mask out and reveal the layer underneath. The amount of scenarios this could be used for is vast.
Elf's demonstration is a beginners overview of where to find the layer shader and how to place a graphic, with an alpha, or anything else in fact, over the top of another layer. That being said this method could be used for painted floorboards, walls with graffiti, glass with labels, stickers on products, practically anything that you can think of, you could use this technique for.
By the end of this 15 minute tutorial, you will have a foundational understanding of the tools needed to layer different shaders or materials on top of one another, using an alpha to cut out the top layer. This is made possible due to the fact that a tiff file transports the alpha correctly for us to use in Maya. If this is something you plan to follow along with, id recommend sticking with a tiff as there are some extra steps with alternates.
