“World wide on the web without the dot com” “Been around the world but cant seem to leave / This state of mind, the tangled web i weave” “Spiderman, identity peter parker” - Inspectah Deck 25 years ago this year, Inspectah Deck released his debut album Uncontrolled Substance in 1999. The album was dope as is, but did not get the respect it was warranted due to it being like the 15th wu project released and that new "car smell" was beginning to wear off. Inspired by INS 4 President but taken a step further with the original Spiderman theme (as told by RZA) and focus on earlier Wu beats given away to other artists when the focus should have been Inspectah Deck. Inside Uncontrolled Substance are already MANY references to Spiderman on multiple songs but seems the theme never came together production wise in the end. For example, Femme Fatale = song abour “black cat”, Nightshift = watching the city drug dealers from top of buildings, etc. At least a dozen plus other references are all over the album. RZA stated that it was to have a whole story theme elements with samples. So I added the 60s spiderman samples, ala Supreme Clientele, and tried to make these skits match the songs themes to create a cohesive story. I did not want to change the songs, just give them the older style of beats to see what the difference would be. I felt it was unneeded but I made a few additions like adding Pop the Brown Hornet and mixing a few songs into new ones. Also, since U-God on vladtv said that the beats werent there for Deck and himself because of the side members taking beats ahead of them, I used all the beats that were given away to others in house. I wanted to make the album sound as if it could have been released between 36 chambers and return to the 36, so the beats are primarily from that time. I also wanted to mix in the sound of the Run and Concrete Jungle beats with synths because imo they sound just like the 90s spider-man theme and to add a splash of the post flood sound. Realistically, I could see this dropping anywhere from Spring 95-Spring 96. Preferably between Tical-Return or Liquid-Ironman. I wanted the album to have a lighthearted feel mixed into the serious wu darker bangers of the era. I feel the "fun" early 90s vibe that propelled wu was missing by 98/99 and wu got very serious and I dont think that helped Inspectah Deck much; so added back are some of the early fun beats that helped balance them out. The OG version i did by hand/ear (v1.0) is on my channel if anyone would like to check it out. I like it for its offness, that reminded me of early wu demos. It has a few different tracks not on here. But it wasnt 100% on time. So maybe youd like a mix of both vibes. Both versions will be available on my bandcamp soon. With this all this in mind, that is Neighborhood Spider-Man. Anyway, props and thanks again to M Grayum for INS 4 President inspiration.
