Until the creation of the Thief class, any D&D character could try to attempt any kind of action, with approval and adjudication by the DM/Referee. After thieves debuted, many players began to think other characters were somehow prevented from attempting the actions described as "Thief Skills" such as climbing, hiding, and hearing noise. I address this controversy, explain why it was wrong, and offer tips for how to make rulings regarding skills in any edition of D&D.
