In 2011, the US military was flying one of its most advanced drones over Iran when it lost control of the aircraft. Iran had used Russian electronic warfare technology to take over control of its navigation system. Once they seized the drone, they decrypted its secrets and reverse-engineered its technology to build their own version. It was a painful lesson for the US — but one that we need to learn well if we want to secure aviation's future going forward. The incident also provides key context for understanding what might have happened to MH370.
