Before embarking on her career as a coach, Casey Stoney won 130 caps for England in an international playing career that spanned almost two decades.
In this extended interview with The Coaches’ Voice, Stoney reflects on her experiences in international football and the lessons she has taken into her own coaching. She speaks about the influence of Hope Powell, both on the England women’s team and herself, before reliving the ups and downs at a succession of major tournaments.
She also considers her status as captain of the Team GB squad that represented the nation at the London 2012 Olympics, and explains how she dealt with a more marginal role once Mark Sampson had replaced Powell as England head coach. Finally, she reflects upon the impact her generation of England Women footballers – including Fara Williams, Jill Scott, Alex Scott and Karen Carney – can have on those following in their footsteps.
