In the third and final chapter of her exclusive interview with The Coaches’ Voice, Casey Stoney looks back on her long and varied playing career, and reflects on the challenges involved with building a future in the women’s game.
Having built a squad from scratch in her first job as a head coach with Manchester United Women, Stoney is now doing the same with NWSL expansion team San Diego Wave. Recent developments in women’s football are a world away from her early days in the game, when she had to pay to play and, even as a professional with teams such as Arsenal and Chelsea, had to work full-time alongside her football. Stoney reflects on the key moments on her journey, and her first taste of coaching at Chelsea, and gives her thoughts on how women’s football can continue to progress.
