An Introduction to Engineering in the Water and Food Industries
This Process Industries Division Event has been organised by the Process Industries Division Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions, part of the Process Industries Community. Water and Waste Water – Pamela and Robert. Water is life as the old phrase goes and affects everything we do from washing clothes to cooking. Water is a foodstuff which many people do not realise and take for granted. The majority of people have never thought about what goes on when they turn on the tap or flush the toilet but there is a whole world of engineering behind every glass of water you drink. Water and wastewater go hand in hand and typically you can’t look at one without looking at the other. Join us on a journey through this fascinating industry where we give an insight into the treatment processes, revisiting the water cycle and how 3 simple atoms H2O affect our everyday lives so profoundly. In addition to this, we will give an introduction into some of the common issues facing the industry today such as climate change, pollution, the natural environment, energy and sustainability. We will explore some of the wide-ranging engineering interfaces, environments and industries that we operate in ranging from railways and housing developments to power generation. So, what are you waiting for? Come on in, the water’s great! Food - Abigail. Starting on a 2 year graduate program, Abigail’s first placement was as a process engineer for a factory producing emulsifiers in the Netherlands. In this role she was able to build a broad range of experience with tasks across engineering/maintenance/quality/R&D. Then during the pandemic when the project manager was prevented from travelling to site, she stepped into a role coordinating contractors, inspecting safety, and managing progress for an €8M installation. Food - Penny. As a project engineer in the rice processing industry, one minute Penny is counting and quality checking rice and the next she is managing a team designing and manufacturing equipment to improve the system for people, planet and profit. During her time at University she completed various internships around the world. From building robotic beer taps in Turkey to designing solutions improving efficiency in industrial power systems in China, to bringing a permanent water supply to a rural village in India, these internships/volunteering roles provided Penny with valuable experience and skills used in her engineering role now. This is the second event in the series “Introduction to the Process Industries” Speakers: Pamela Robinson (Principal Mechanical Engineer - Atkins) Robert Chin (Senior Mechanical Engineer - Atkins) Penny Morton (Project Engineer - Koolmill Systems) Abigail Pinckard (Project Manager - Kerry) Chair: Rewnizad Mogrelia (Design Engineer Fluor)
