We've learned how to rename mixed numbers as fractions greater than 1, and rename fractions greater than 1 as mixed numbers, in video 7.6 linked below. We can multiply a fraction or a mixed number by a whole number by using renaming. Fractions greater than 1 are also called improper fractions, their numerator is greater than their denominator. We go step-by-step to show how to multiply a whole number by a mixed number using renaming. The Identity Property of Multiplication states that the product of any number and 1 is that number. The number keeps its identity when multiplied by 1. We see what's happening when we multiply a whole number by a mixed number using the Distributive Property. We review changing a mixed number into a fraction greater than 1. We do higher order thinking skills by finding unknown numbers in equations. We solve two word problems that involve multiplying a whole number by a mixed number.
