On June 6th, 2025, developer Metux committed the ultimate sin against corporate Linux he forked Xorg and called it XLibre. Within 24 hours, Red Hat employees deleted his account, purged his code, and wiped 140 merge requests from existence. Soviet-style unpersoning, but with git commits instead of photographs.
This isn't just developer drama. This is about who controls your Linux desktop and whether corporations get to dictate how you use your own computer.
The Players:
Xorg: Running Linux displays since the 1980s. Zero security, total functionality.
Wayland: Red Hat's "secure" replacement that breaks 40 years of tools
XLibre: The rebel fork that promises security WITHOUT sacrificing functionality
Here's what Wayland breaks: OBS features, screen recording, remote desktop, automation tools, gaming performance, VR support, accessibility tools, and basically everything power users depend on. But hey, at least your keystrokes are "secure" while you can't actually work.
The timing? Not coincidental. Ubuntu dropped Xorg support 3 days after XLibre's announcement. Multiple distros fell in line within a week. Classic embrace, extend, extinguish - the same playbook Microsoft used in the 90s.
Metux carried 64% of Xorg commits in 2024 while Red Hat abandoned it. Now they're forcing everyone onto their broken replacement and memory-holing anyone who objects.
