WWII Secret Missions: The Hunt for Hitler's Top Commanders I SLICE HISTORY
During World War II, Allied operatives went on secret missions to kill Adolph Hitler and his top officers, including Erwin Rommel. Erwin Rommel was Hitler‘s favorite General. In summer 1941 Rommel had driven the Allies out of Libya ready to invade Egypt. The man had become a myth, the “Desert Fox” seemed unbeatable. So Allied special forces set out for the most ambitious commando operation to capture one single man before the hunt on Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Those secret missions behind enemy lines tried to make a decisive impact on defeating the totalitarian Nazi regime. The raids on Rommel were followed by further US and British missions to kidnap or kill more of Hitler’s generals. Operating behind enemy lines were daring men who provide the historic model for many fiction characters such as the “Inglourious Basterds”. Those historic scenarios are still of high political and moral importance today: Do democratic states at war have the right to send their soldier’s behind enemy lines to capture or kill political and military leaders of the other side? Long before the great success of “Inglourious Basterds” at box offices around the world, the story of Allied special operations had produced Hollywood movies such as “Darby’s Rangers” (1957) or “Raid on Rommel” (1971). Now, this documentary tells the real story of the plots to get Rommel, Nazi Air Force Chief Hermann Goering and others of Hitler’s Generals. The very first days in the history of the US and British Special Forces saw daring real-life adventures taking place in the deserts of North Africa, in the Greek mountains and along the cliffs of Normandy. Were the special forces ordered to kidnap the Nazi Generals or did their mission include outright assassination? Who were the masterminds behind the plots and why did some operations succeeded while others led to disaster?
