So what do all those letters mean ... Number 1 - it tests for is the total organic carbon TOC. It measures the amount of carbon found in organic compounds in the water. Why does it matter? A high TOC can indicate the presence of bacteria, viruses, micro-plastics or decaying plant matter for instance if your tap water has a high TOC level it could mean that there's a buildup of organic contaminants potentially leading to unpleasant odors, tastes or even health risks. Number 2 - it tests for the chemical oxygen demand COD. This indicates the amount of oxygen required to break down organic matter in water and having high COD levels could indicate pollution from industrial waste, untreated sewage or agriculture runoff for example if you're testing water from a nearby stream or camping and you find a high COD it could mean the water is contaminated with harmful chemicals and it is unsafe to drink. Number 3 - it checks for total dissolved solids TDS This measures the concentration of dissolved substances like minerals, salts and metals in water a high TDS reading might mean your water contains high levels of salts which could be due to a natural mineral content or pollution. For instance, if your tap water has a high TDS level it might taste salty or metallic indicating potential issues with your water supply Number 4 - is UV absorbents UV 27 5 so UV absorbance reflects the presence of organic substances by measuring how much UV light is absorbed at 275 nm High UV absorbents can indicate the presence of organic pollutants like pesticides herbicides or even pharmaceuticals. Number 5 - it tests for electrical conductivity EC This measures the water's ability to conduct electricity which is directly related to the concentration of dissolved salts Number 6 - Temperature Now while temperature itself isn't directly harmful it can affect how contaminants interact with the water. For example, higher temperatures can increase the solubility of certain chemicals potentially making them more harmful.
