Why was POPE FRANCIS buried here?
Pope Francis chose to be buried in the basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, reviving an old tradition of pope’s being buried elsewhere than in St Peter’s basilica in the Vatican. He is the eighth pope to be buried in the basilica sixth the thirteenth century. His burial place is in a niche in the north aisle of the nave, between the Pauline and Sforza chapels. The Pauline chapel houses a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and Child called the ‘Salus Populi Romani’ icon, which Francis had particularly strong devotion to during his pontificate and it was his wish to be buried by it. His simple tomb, close to the icon he so loved, bears upon it the name 'Franciscus' and includes an enlarged version of his silver pectoral cross.
