Why has there never been a single game quite like Spyro the Dragon? That could refer to the PS1 trilogy as a whole, but I’m actually just talking about Spyro 1; even its sequels had a marked shift in approach, as the team grew both in size and experience. Those subtle changes still lead to wonderful games in their own right, often seen as better than this one…but even those little brothers don’t scratch the same itch. There’s something about Spyro that hits a different feeling in your brain and your heart than contemporary collectathons like Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, or Croc; there aren't indie revivals for Spyro like you see with other games, at least not ones that don't also reference the Bandicoots of the world.
So I played Spyro again…twice, to try and answer this question: Why are there no games that hit quite the same way as Spyro 1? This time around, I think I’ve figured out what it is that, at least to me, makes Spyro 1 a one-of-one game, and it comes down to a few core, sometimes overlapping points.
