Why IAS/IPS/IRS Officers Quit the Job? Complete Truth By Sachin Jain Sir | ENSURE IAS By IRS 2016
Why Some Civil Servants Resign & Others Remain | Honest Realities by an IRS Officer
Civil services – the dream of millions. And yet, once achieved, many officers walk away from it. Why does this happen? Why do some resign from such a prestigious service, while others stay for life?
I’m [Sachin Jain], an IRS officer of the 2016 batch. I cracked UPSC twice – AIR 712 and 286 – and I’ve served inside the system. But more importantly, I’ve seen both sides – the promise and the paradox.
In this video, let me speak honestly – no sugarcoating – about why some of us leave, and why some of us stay.
When we prepare for UPSC, we’re filled with idealism – 'I’ll change the system… I’ll serve the people…'
But the reality inside the service is often far more complex.
You quickly realise – power doesn’t always equal impact. You may have a position, but not always the freedom to act. Files move slowly. Reforms are resisted. And for those with a restless energy, this becomes frustrating.
👉 That’s why some officers leave – not because they don’t want to serve, but because they want to serve differently.
Some officers – like a few of my own batchmates – found more meaning outside.
They wanted scale. Speed. Autonomy.
You’ll see them in startups, public policy, politics, even teaching civil service aspirants.
Because they realised – maybe I can solve a water crisis better through innovation than through government files.
Or maybe I can influence public thinking more effectively through YouTube than through a department circular.
👉 They didn’t leave the mission. They just changed the method.
Now, not everyone leaves. And there are good reasons to stay.
✅ Job security – unmatched.
✅ Social respect – especially in smaller towns.
✅ Steady career growth – with some opportunity to create meaningful change.
And for many, even if they face challenges, the sense of purpose, the love for fieldwork, or even personal constraints like family responsibilities make staying the right choice.
Here’s the truth most won’t admit:
Almost every honest civil servant, at some point, asks themselves – ‘Am I being used well?’
Some answer yes.
Some say no.
Some try to balance both – they stay in service, but run parallel projects, write books, support NGOs, or teach.
There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer here. But I’ll tell you this – the ones who stay without becoming cynical and the ones who leave without becoming arrogant – both deserve respect.
For me, cracking UPSC was a test of discipline.
But understanding why I cracked it and what I want to do with it – that’s a lifelong reflection.
Whether one stays or leaves – it should be out of clarity, not confusion.
Out of purpose, not peer pressure.
That’s what I tell my students today –
‘Don’t chase UPSC for the badge. Chase it for the battle – the one within and outside.’
