Naloxone (Narcan) is an opiate antagonist that will counter the effects of opiate overdose. We give Narcan as first responders when a patient is found unresponsive with pin point pupils and not breathing.
They're are many ways to give Narcan, from intranasal, intravenous, intramuscular and intraosseous. The majority of EMTs can give intranasal Narcan when they suspect opiate overdose and is part of your EMS education as a first responder.
My goal with this video is to help you better understand how opiate overdose patients present, give you clinical tips when managing them and know when to give Narcan as an First Responder, EMT, AEMT or Paramedic.
