Pablo Lucio Vasquez was a Texas man convicted of the 1998 murder of 12-year-old David Cardenas in Donna, Texas. At the time, Vasquez was 20 years old and under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He claimed to have heard voices urging him to commit the act. After the crime, Vasquez and his 15-year-old cousin, Andres Rafael Chapa, attempted to conceal the body in a vacant field. Vasquez also took a ring and necklace from Cardenas. An anonymous tip led authorities to the body and eventually to Vasquez, who confessed to the murder. In 1999, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Chapa received a 35-year sentence due to his age. Vasquez's appeals, including claims of mental illness and jury selection issues, were unsuccessful. He was executed by lethal injection on April 6, 2016, at the age of 38. In his final statement, he apologized to the victim's family and acknowledged the justice served
