We've already covered blurry backgrounds but we glossed over the details on what is depth of field, how to alter depth of field and what actually controls depth of field. Time to unpick those things today. Depth of Field, otherwise known as "DoF" is a measure of how much of a photograph is in focus. You can set up shots to have a HUGE depth of field or a shallow depth of field, each serve a different purpose. Usually, portraits use a shallow depth of field, but aperture isn't the only control of it.
