Palpatine watched from his throne, cackling, his shriveled hands itching to cast bolts of ruinous Force lightning the moment his puppet failed to complete the task he had laid out. Watching as Luke refuses to strike down his father, Palpatine cackles and unleashes his lightning. The bolts slam into Luke, agony reflected in the young Jedi’s widened eyes. Desperate to save himself and Vader, Luke crawls toward his father, hoping to kindle the spark of Anakin. But Vader’s torment shifts his priorities. In that haze of pain, he hears Palpatine’s mocking voice: Palpatine: “Too feeble to stand, my friend? Perhaps you have grown… obsolete.” From beneath the mask, Vader’s eyes narrow. Hate wells up. This is no moral epiphany, no shining moment of redemption. It is anger—anger that the Emperor would dare attempt to replace him. And then Vader does the unthinkable: with the last of his energy, he uses the Force to rip away a small holocron—an artifact that glimmers with blood-red symbols—from Palpatine’s robe.
