Padme is initially disgusted and horrified by what she hears from Anakin. It sounds as if he’s truly become mad with power and now only sees what the Dark Side has to offer without its cost. But at the same time, she also cannot fully disagree with him. These have been a hard few days for her, the biggest thing being the loss of trust regarding Palpatine. He was a man she held in high regard and thought was above the corruption of the Republic. But now she sees he’s no different and is determined to stop him, especially as he’s slowly taking her husband away from him. With his new Empire, he is on the verge of taking control of the galaxy, and while she initially suggests running away somewhere he can’t find them, a small part of her can’t bring herself to do that. She has to stop him somehow. And as she looks at Anakin, she can sense that he wants the same time. Slowly, she takes his hand and nods, squeezing it tightly as she stares up at the man she loves. Padme: Alright, I trust you. We’ll try stopping him, but I don’t want to lose the man I love in the process. We have to do this right, Anakin, not just turn into monsters like him. Anakin: I won’t ever turn out like him, Padme. I promise. Padme: Are you sure? Anakin, look at all you’ve done! What will stop you from doing this again? Obi-Wan: Indeed, Anakin? What is there to hold you back? The Jedi Master appears from the landing ramp, lightsaber ready as he regards the two grimly. He heard everything and felt himself struggling to control his anger. Obi-Wan: Look what the two of you are suggesting. You’re planning on overthrowing the Emperor, and yet you are willing to channel the Dark Side. This is not the way. Anakin: And what is the way, master? Doing nothing? Turning your noses on the suffering of others like the Jedi? That’s what got us here in the first place, Obi-Wan. No, the time has come to look for a new way, one that can make a difference instead of just defending what is broken. Padme: Obi-Wan, I’m afraid Anakin is correct. We fought Palpatine the right way; we fought him with all we had, and he still one. Now, we need to try something different. Obi-Wan…we need your help. Together, the three of us might stand a chance. He looks at the pair, tempted by this offer. He wants to say yes and turn against the emperor. But he also sees the darkness in Anakin and hesitates. Slowly, Obi-Wan lowers his lightsaber and shakes his head. Obi-Wan: I’m sorry, Anakin. I can’t watch you do this. But I won’t stop you either. So, if this is truly the path you choose, then go. The two share a nod and board their ships. But as they depart, Obi-Wan grabs Padme’s shoulder and whispers to him. Obi-Wan: Keep him safe, from himself most of all. Soon after, Padme gives birth to her children. The process is long and laborious, but it is not nearly as dangerous as Anakin feared. This only solidifies his hatred for Palpatine. All this time, he has planted seeds of worry in his mind, telling him how his wife and children are in danger. And yet, nothing happened at the end of the day. Only then does Anakin realize how much of a manipulation this has all been. Of course, neither one is truly in a position to challenge Palpatine just yet. He has full control of the Senate and can make any scandal disappear. Instead, they realize their only hope is to bide their time and gather in strength. This means feigning obedience and then secretly undermining him. Padme proves to be an expert in this, and when she makes her return to the Senate, none are more surprised than Palpatine. But she immediately begins to meet with people like Bail Organna and Mon Mothma who challenge Palaptine politically, giving some push-back against his proposed bills. However, their numbers are few enough that they can’t seriously make a difference. This allows the new emperor to keep them around as controlled opposition. Meanwhile, Anakin continues his training as a Sith, learning all he can from the new emperor. He throws himself into this new role, gladly accepts everything he can, which he can use against the chancellor when the time comes. Despite Padme’s warnings, he does not hesitate in learning all of these powers, things which go far against what the Jedi teach. From probing minds to strangling people with the Force, Anakin sees all of it as a necessity. But at the same time, he tries to learn more about his master and how they can stop him. He soon puts these powers to the test on the battlefield as rebellions and insurgents continue to remain an issue even after the war as those who refuse to surrender take up arms.
