What I Wish I'd Known Before Publishing
One moment you are an aspiring writer; the next you are technically a business entity. Things get very real the moment you sign a publishing contract or self-publish a book. Your writing workshops probably do not spend much time discussing how advances are paid in installments, whether you should form an LLC, or how to determine how much out-of-pocket expense you can devote to promoting the book. In this Money Matters event, we’ll hear from fiction and nonfiction authors about what they want first-time authors (or anyone struggling with the business and career side of authorship) to know. Host Erin Lowry and guests Kara Perez and Rebecca Thorne will share their wisdom and take your questions. Panelists Kara Perez is the founder of Bravely Go, a sustainability focused financial education company. Bravely focuses on bringing actionable, intersectional and accessible financial education to people who never learned the language of money. She is the author of the book, Money For Change. Kara has been featured in The New York Times, Good Morning America, Forbes, NPR, Glamour, ABC Nightline News, and US News and World Report as a financial expert. Additionally, for 2 years Kara co-hosted the award winning podcast The Fairer Cents, which has been named the top money podcast for women by Forbes and The Balance. Rebecca Thorne is a USA Today, Indie, and Sunday Times bestselling author, specializing in fantasy, sci-fi, and romance. She is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, hails from sunny Arizona, and uses her ADHD as a superpower to write multiple books a year. When she’s not writing (or avoiding writing), Rebecca can be found traveling the country as a flight attendant, hiking with her dogs and lovely wife, or basking in the sun like a lizard. Erin Lowry is the author of the four-part Broke Millennial series, including: Broke Millennial, Broke Millennial Takes On Investing and Broke Millennial Talks Money and her soon-to-be-published Broke Millennial Workbook: Take Control and Get Your Financial Life Together. Erin’s been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and on CBS Sunday Morning, CNBC and The Rachael Ray Show. She has written for The New York Times, USA Today, and is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion. Special Thanks to Our Supporters and Partner Organizations With support from the National Endowment for the Arts and our donors, the Authors Guild Foundation is pleased to offer this program free to the public.
