Soon after, he began his classical guitar studies and developed his fingerstyle technique. As a music college student, he was attracted to jazz when he saw a video of jazz guitarist Joe Pass improvising on the song, All The Things You Are and later Misty. His journey of learning jazz has taken him all over the world, from studying jazz composition at Berklee College of Music to doing his Masters in Music (Jazz Studies) in the heart of Silicon Valley. Az has studied with jazz guitar greats such as Tuck Andress, Mick Goodrick, Jon Damian, Ben Monder, Jimmy Wyble, Bret Willmott, Julian Lage, Mike Moreno, David Tronzo, Wayne Krantz, Jonathan Kreisberg, John Stowell, Tomo Fujita and Martin Miller. In 2024, Az received a scholarship for the Alternative Guitar Summit Camp 2024 at Full Moon Resort, Big Indian, New York, USA. There, he attended workshops by John Scofield, Mike Stern, Leni Stern, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nels Cline, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Rodney Jones, Joel Harrison, Gilad Hekselman & Camila Meza. In this unique session, Az will share the most important things he wishes he knew when he started learning jazz. If you’ve ever been curious about learning jazz, come for this session to start your 2025 strong. You might get tips that help you save 27 years of learning this style on your own. [About Az Samad] A 3-time TEDx Speaker, Guitarist-Composer-Educator Az Samad has recorded with Grammy Winners Flaco Jiménez & Max Baca; graduated from Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude honors (Jazz Composition and Guitar Performance) & taught at Berklee’s Summer Guitar Sessions program; performed in the USA, Europe & Asia; and appeared on 22 CDs. His book, Jazz Improvisation Uncovered, received acclaim from American jazz guitarist Julian Lage. Prior to going to Berklee, Az graduated from ICOM in 2003 from the University of Westminster, UK 3+0 Professional Music (Arranging) program. Currently Az develops online guitar courses in Malay to help guitarists improve their skills from beginner to pro.
