This week’s video is a technique tutorial about wrist circles at the piano. I’ll show you how to make the wrist motion, and help you understand how to incorporate wrist circles into your playing. I demonstrate using specific examples from the literature.
Featured Repertoire:
Chopin B minor Prelude, Op. 28, No. 6
Beethoven “Pathetique” Sonata, Op 13: Mvmt I
Chopin Nocturne, Op. 55, No. 1
Louise Farrenc Nocturne, Op. 49
R. Schumann “Aufschwung” Op. 12, No. 2
A wrist circle is a physical motion that you make at the piano, that allows the wrist to move the fingers into position to play and helps you avoid isolating the fingers. Wrist circles are a really important part of piano technique because it helps make it much easier to play, and it helps you be able to play more efficiently.
Incorporating wrist circles into your piano technique helps you play faster by grouping notes together as you play. Wrist circles also help make the music sound more musical and expressive because the notes are being shaped by the hand, fingers and arm, rather than by each individual finger.
