War and weddings in Gaza | Unreported World
Unreported World is from Gaza with the young couples getting married amidst the destruction. But while Gaza is under siege, some are determined to tie the knot anyway. Filmed from December last year, we follow two couples trying to live and make plans in al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, which Israel says is a safe zone for the 1.9m Palestinians displaced from across Gaza. We also follow the work of wedding photographer Najah and we see how the splendour of Gaza’s famously elaborate weddings has changed since the Hamas attacks of October 7th and the subsequent Israeli bombardment. Today weddings are anything but normal. On the outskirts of one of southern Gaza’s many camps for displaced people, we meet Hamzah, who despite the extraordinary circumstances is planning to marry his fiancé Nada. Forced to evacuate northern Gaza, we follow him as he buys and builds a marital home – in his case a tent - with the help of his family. Meanwhile we meet Mohammad and Shaimaa who are determined to marry, but struggle with price increases and the idea of starting a new life in a displacement camp. As a fragile ceasefire takes hold earlier this year, we follow both couples back to their homes in northern Gaza, where they confront the challenges of having to rebuild again.
