Virgil, The Aeneid, Dido & Aeneas, The Descent into the Underworld
Virgil’s Aeneid is one of the great works of Western literature. Perhaps its most famous passage is the fated encounter between Dido and Aeneas, demonstrating a tragedy to the modern reader but the piety of Aeneas in obeying the gods by leaving her. He sees her again in the underworld, where he transforms from the wandering Trojan into the steadfast Roman.
