USS Laffey DD-724 - "The Ship That Would Not Die"
Warship Guide - USS Laffey DD-724 USS Laffey was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Bartlett Laffey who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his stand against Confederate forces in March of 1864. Like her namesake 81 years prior, Laffey would also make a valiant stand herself in the waters off Okinawa in April of 1945. Here, she would earn the moniker of "The Ship That Would Not Die" after she withstood one of the most ferocious kamikaze attacks of the Pacific War on a single ship. Today, Laffey is a National Historic Landmark and is preserved as a museum ship at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
