Unifi SuperLink Gateway - Another IoT S̶t̶a̶n̶d̶a̶r̶d̶ Protocol?

The new SuperLink proprietary s̶t̶a̶n̶d̶a̶r̶d̶ protocol from Unifi is here and the Gateway is the first device using it. Do we need another s̶t̶a̶n̶d̶a̶r̶d̶ protocol though? And how could it look for home automation enthusiasts. EDIT: Updated the description and thumbnail to say "protocol" instead of "standard", as I got the two terms mixed up.
