Mixed Dal Tadka is a hearty, lightly spiced lentil dish made with toor and moong dal, tempered with garlic, onion, tomatoes, and whole red chilies.
Paired with Jeera Rice, it makes a simple, comforting, and flavorful meal for two.
Mixed Dal Tadka (for 2 servings)
🔸 Ingredients:
For the Dal:
Toor dal – ¼ cup
Moong dal – ¼ cup
Water – 1.5 to 2 cups
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
Salt – to taste
For the Tadka (Tempering):
Ghee or oil – 1 to 1.5 tbsp
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Whole dry red chilies – 1
Garlic – 3 cloves (finely chopped)
Ginger – ½ tsp (finely chopped)
Onion – ½ medium (finely chopped)
Tomato – ½ medium (finely chopped)
Green chili – 1 small (slit or chopped)
Hing – a pinch (optional)
Red chili powder – ¼ tsp (optional)
Coriander powder – ½ tsp (optional)
Garam masala – ¼ tsp (optional)
Fresh coriander leaves – 1 tbsp (chopped)
🔹 Instructions:
Cook the Dal:
Wash both dals and pressure cook them with water, turmeric, and a little salt for 3–4 whistles.
Mash gently and keep aside.
Prepare the Tadka:
Heat ghee/oil, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add dry red chili, then chopped garlic and ginger. Sauté till golden.
Add onion and green chili; cook until golden.
Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
(Optional) Add hing, chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Stir well.
Combine and Simmer:
Add the cooked dal to the tadka. Adjust salt and water to desired consistency.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
