For the hobbyist photographing their partners horse as a known entity there won't often be an issue. But for the working equine photographer going into strange locations with horses and people we've never met - I think it is essential to have studied equine behaviour and communication first hand, in order to work as efficiently, smoothly, and above all safely. As in the wild herd, the domesticated horse searches for a leader, someone he can trust to lead him safely through all the threats he perceives. Unfortunately not every horse owner has established this principle - with empathy, kindness, confidence, and control of energy - in their relationship with their horse, resulting in an anxious animal. It's easy to spot whether an owner is connected or not: Simply observe this - is the owner moving the horses feet or is the horse making the owner move? Whoever moves the others feet is the leader - or at least working towards being the leader. A horse without a leader is an anxious horse, is not only unhappy, but also potentially dangerous. ______________________________________ Outro music - World War Blues by Mini Vandals (Royalty free from YouTube library) Timestamps: 0:00 Horse Kicks Hurt 0:37 Horse Misperceptions 1:43 How To Behave Around Horses 2:50 How Horses Think 5:55 Getting A Horses Attention
