Timeless Elegance: Exploring Babylonstoren’s Bonsai Display Featuring a 94-Year-Old Wild Olive

On 5 January 2025, I had the pleasure of walking through the bonsai display at Babylonstoren, set in the Pofadder exhibition area at the far end of their beautiful gardens. As I approached, the serene atmosphere of the venue promised a showcase of artistry and nature intertwined. Greeting visitors at the entrance was a magnificent 94-year-old wild olive, standing proudly to the right as if to set the tone for the display. Its gnarled trunk and balanced canopy exuded timeless elegance, a testament to the skill and dedication of its curator. Inside, a stunning array of trees awaited, including baobabs with their unmistakable silhouettes, delicate Buddlejas, graceful ficus varieties, a single pine, and a few other intriguing species. Each tree seemed to tell its own story, carefully shaped and positioned to highlight its unique character. The intricate details of their trunks and foliage drew me in, offering new perspectives with every step. This marks the fourth time I’ve attended the Babylonstoren bonsai exhibition, and it never disappoints. I return each year, eager to discover what new treasures are on display. This annual pilgrimage has become a tradition, a time to reflect on the beauty of these miniature marvels and their enduring artistry.
