The Wild Starts Here | First Tracks in New Zealand
This idea could change the way we travel forever. What if we flew to a foreign country, bought an old rig, fixed it up in a week and drove around the country for a month hitting all the best off-road tracks? Well, that’s what we’re going to attempt. Fly buy build rally. Check out the rest of our travel movies: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLad7by0nsIChCwQ46Kp1pOZpivhs_HKn7&si=nC7kBmYEgUX9rDm- This process began months ago. I switch my marketplace location to Auckland New Zealand and every day would look for rigs. Finding awesome one’s wasn’t hard, but finding diesel, manual, solid axle WITH wof reg and rucs proved to be a bit of a mission. Wof stands for warrant of fitness, it’s a mandatory bi annual inspection on older vehicles to make sure they’re fit for the road, REG is registration, which just means that it has a clean title and current owner, and RUCS are road user charges, $75/1000km, only for diesels. It wasn’t until 4 days before our flight that we actually got a hook into something. Thankfully we’ve got a great connection in New Zealand. By a stroke of amazing luck, we ended up paying only 12,500 NZD. While we went over budget, we got a truck that already has a lift, new tires, and a winch. This is going to save us a ton of time, hopefully. As long as the maintenance goes well. Our last stop before we hit the road is Feldon Shelter. The sister company of West Supply who was one of the pioneers in brining premium overland gear to New Zealand. Thanks to Rene’s introduction, they’ve agreed to loan us a tent, some storage solutions and maxxtraxx for our upcoming adventure. We’ve bounced from shop to shop picking up more than just gear and swag. The energy here is contagious. I can’t really put into words how fulfilling it is when others are just as excited about your dream as you are. It’s a different kind of Sponsorship when you don’t have to sell yourself first. YUP, the fly buy build and rally series is alive and thriving. We’re on the west coast of the South Island, Karma. Our eyes are still fresh to a new place yet we’re already feeling like it’s going to be hard to top the proximity of cool things to one another. This is the only cave I’ve ever entered that made me want to be a cave man After scraping our awestruck eye off the walls and our speechless jaws off the limestone floor we pointed south yet again in completion of the late entry to the itinerary. WOW dropped out of our mouths like a revolving door, only to continue as we spotted perhaps the best looking beach to lay tires on, so we answer the call. From Karamea, and one of New Zealand’s more remote regions we find ourselves on the famous great coast road. A drive set to give the Oregon coast a run for its money. From this point, we can almost just expect to be surprised with this country. Tomorrow though, we are continuing this short river route past where last years tracks have been washed away. We’ll have to navigate it for ourselves. But that’s for next time.
