Sadly, the Britannia's development would be mired in delays and controversy, with the crash of the second prototype and a highly publicised spat between Bristol and BOAC, leading to a souring of confidence in the airliner by prospective customers, while by the time the machine finally entered service, the Boeing 707 jet was only a year way from its own launch, and would leave the Britannia in the dust in terms of performance and commercial success.
