Three years prior they were in a mess, luckily escaping the wooden spoon on points to France, coupled with a first ever loss to Italy. It was fair to say that Ireland rugby was in a transitional phase and they needed someone to conduct the transition. In came Joe Schmidt, after a successful tenure with Irish giants Leinster Rugby, winning back to back Heineken Cups, plus a number of other trophies. Schmidt came in with a clinical mode of operation, nothing glamorous, but just some effectiveness. Immediately, in his first year, they pipped France to take home the 2014 Six Nations trophy, with B.O.D. having his final game. They captured the title again the next year. Also in 2014, they had a long awaited victory over the Wallabies. In 2016 they beat the Boks in South Africa for the first time, a key event, as the Joe Schmidt magic continued. A tell tale signature of Joe was his ability to draw up trick plays.
