The Real Vorkuta - Rare Footage of Life Inside the Soviet Union's Gulag City (1991)
On 17 September 1991, ITN visited the Soviet city of Vorkuta. North of the Arctic Circle, the coal mining city's grim beginnings lay in the establishment of Vorkutlag, the Soviet Union's notorious forced labour camp, in 1932. Vorkutlag formed part of the broader Gulag system of the USSR, and was the largest of the forced labour camps in European Russia. ITN's cameras captured the city's unique experience of the disintegration of the Soviet Union. One of the most visible signs of change was the number of people leaving, the city having originally been populated through forced relocations of prisoners condemned to forced labour in Arctic isolation. In the decades since the USSR's end, more than half of Vorkuta's inhabitants have left.
