THE QUIET GUN! Full Western Movie in HD! Forrest Tucker, Lee Van Cleef, Jim Davis, Mara Corday! WOW!
THE QUIET GUN is based on the novel LAWMAN by Lauran Paine, who also wrote the novel OPEN RANGE which was the basis for the Kevin Costner/Robert Duvall western.
THE QUIET GUN was a feature film made in 1957 during the time of the western TV boom and is loaded with a fine array of western veterans. To starts things off, Lee Van Cleef rides into town and immediately begins picking on blacksmith, Hank Worden. You know? Old Mose from THE SEARCHERS. This top of the film action defines these two characters. Sure, Lee is mean and Hank, a bit slow witted. Usually, Hank Worden only had a scene or two in a movie for comic relief. In THE QUIET GUN, Hank has a larger role and shines.
Someone else who shines in this film is top billed 6’ 4” Forrest Tucker as the Sheriff. Tucker made his film debut in a classic, opposite Gary Cooper in THE WESTERNER. Mostly remembered for his comedic role as Sgt O’Rourke in TV’s F-TROOP, Tucker gives a much more controlled performance in THE QUIET GUN, nothing like his later F-TROOP persona. Jim Davis plays a rancher whose Native American mistress, Mara Corday, is insulted by a townsman, who Davis shoots in self-defense. Tucker sets out on a quest to arrest his old friend, Davis, for murder.
Yessir, they’re buddies but their relationship is a bit more complicated. You see, Sheriff Tucker loves his pal’s wife, the beautiful Kathleen Crowley. He’s got his hands full with romance and trying to put down mob violence.
The 1950s truly were the heyday of TV westerns. Producers were making westerns for the big screen, too. Color widescreen epics with A list movie stars like John Wayne, James Stewart, and William Holden. What’s a filmmaker to do when he can’t afford color, much less star names. He does what this film delivers…hires good, recognizable performers, and shoots in wide screen even if it still is in B&W.
THE QUIET GUN is interesting for that, too. Wide Screen…B&W movie in 1957. Check out the dynamic composition and the framing of the characters and background. Very creative by Director of Photography, John Mescall. In the 1930s he filmed several black and white classics, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and THE BLACK CAT. Filmed at Iverson Ranch on a very recognizable western street in Corriganville, THE QUIET GUN should be more well-known.
